I. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT

The Sant Bani School Athletic Department provides a diverse program which encourages students of a wide variety of ages and all ability levels to participate. This is achieved by working within the limited resources and student population at the school. The focus of the program is to help all students to have success and to promote interaction among a variety of age groups as well as with a larger community consisting of other schools and athletes. Personal growth, teamwork, and good sportsmanship are strongly emphasized. A key focus of the program is to help build confidence, fitness, healthy responsibility, and life long interests among those students participating. The department works with students to help find a balance among many school activities, academics, and a wide variety of student interests.

III. ATHLETE CONTRACT

The following is a sample Athlete Contract that coaches may choose to use or not, and can adapt as they see fit.

 STUDENT/PARENT ATHLETIC CONTRACT

Participation in athletics is a serious commitment. Therefore, students must read and sign this contract in order to participate in sports at the Sant Bani School. This contract must be signed and returned to the coach(es) within seven days. Failure to return the signed contract on time results in one unexcused absence. A new contract must be signed at the beginning of each season.

You are making a commitment to yourself, your teammates and your coach(es). In order for each athlete to reach his/her potential, to improve his/her own skills and performance, and for the team to establish camaraderie, it is essential that all team members be present at all practices and all meets. See the attached addenda regarding responsibilities of multiple sport athletes.

1. Two unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the team.
2. The coach will determine which absences will be excused.

a. Planned absences such as medical appointments or college visits will be presented to the coach in writing prior to the date of absence.
b. Unplanned absences such as illness and family emergencies will be discussed. It is the athlete's responsibility to contact the coach in person or by phone in a timely manner. Absences will be automatically recorded as unexcused, unless the coach determines otherwise.

3. Transportation to and from school is your responsibility. "I can't get a ride" is not an excused absence. Review the schedule and coordinate transportation with your parents, neighbors, teammates or coach. (Transportation from school to off campus practices or games/meets is Sant Bani School responsibility.)
4. Helmets are required for all Sant Bani alpine ski team training and meets. School helmets are available on a very limited basis.
5. Mouth guards are required for Field Hockey, Soccer, and Basketball. Shinguards are required for Field Hockey and Soccer. Goggles are recommended for Field Hockey teams.
6. Grades for Ski Teams: Students must maintain at least a "C+" overall average and at least a "C-" in each individual class to participate on the ski team. Any student whose grades fall below this level will not compete in ski meets until his/her grades meet the minimum requirements.
7. Communication with Teachers: While teachers are notified by the athletic department regarding off campus games and leaving early from school it is still important that the student athlete communicate with teachers and make sure they understand any make up work that is required of them.
8. Uniforms: Uniforms are the property of the school and must be taken care of. See the addenda regarding uniforms ∓ equipment.

I (student) __________________________ understand the commitment I am making to the ________________team and I agree to attend all practices and competitions.

I (parent) __________________________ understand the commitment my child is making to the __________________ team and I agree to support this commitment in every way I can.

IV. MULTIPLE SPORT ATHLETE

Because Sant Bani is a small school and would like to maintain a diverse program offering, students may choose to be involved in more than one sport. It is up to individual coaches to make the choice to allow their team members to also participate in another sport. It is understood that each coach has a different coaching philosophy and it is therefore important that students communicate with the appropriate coaches and understand their coaching philosophy for that sport before joining a team. Students must realize that participating in more that one sport is a very serious commitment and requires a great deal of responsibility and communication with coaches, teachers and parents. A schedule that includes which practices and games for each team that the student will participate in for the season will be arranged at the beginning of the season with both teams' coaches and the athletic director.

 ADDENDA TO STUDENT/PARENT ATHLETIC CONTRACT

Multiple Sport Athlete Students

As a multiple sport athlete, I understand the commitment to both teams that I will be a member of. I will work with the coaches of both teams and the athletic director to prepare a schedule of practices and games that I will participate in for each team for the season. This schedule will be done at the beginning of the season. Because communication with coaches, parents and the school is critical, I understand that I will be expected to keep all parties involved informed. Excused and unexcused absences are treated in the same way as listed above in the Student/Parent Athletic Contract.

I (student) __________________________ understand the commitment I am making to the ________________team and the ________________ team and I agree to attend all practices and competitions as listed on my preseason schedule approved by both coaches and athletic director.

Student Signature __________________________ Date ______________

I (parent) __________________________ understand the commitment my child is making to the __________________ team and the ____________________ team and I agree to support this commitment in every way I can.

Parent Signature ___________________________ Date ______________

V. UNIFORMS/EQUIPMENT

It is expected that all uniforms and equipment that is owned by the school will be borrowed and returned in the same condition given normal wear and tear. Any uniform or equipment that is borrowed by the student must be returned by that same student. Uniform numbers will be recorded by coaches or a coach assistant. Uniforms may not be purchased from the school. Sant Bani does offer athletic clothing other than uniforms that students may choose to purchase.
 UNIFORM ADDENDA

I understand that I have signed out a uniform from the school and I am responsible for laundering and keeping track of the uniform. If the uniform is not returned or is returned in unacceptable condition, or is not returned prior to the date required, the following action will be taken.

1. The student's parents will be billed for the uniform.

2. The student will be given a demerit each week until the uniform is returned or paid for.

3. Seniors will lose senior privilege.

4. The student may not go out for another sport until the uniform is returned or paid for.

I (student) __________________________ understand my responsibility for the uniform being loaned to me and the consequences for not taking good care of it and the timely return of the uniform.

Student Signature ___________________________ Date ______________
I (parent) __________________________ understand my child's responsibility for the uniform being loaned to my son/daughter and the consequences for not taking good care of it and the timely return of the uniform.

Parent Signature ___________________________ Date____________

VI. NUMBER OF EVENTS PER WEEK

Because students may participate in multiple sports at the school there is a possibility that on some weeks a student may become overburdened with games or meets. The Athletic Department therefore places restrictions on the number of athletic events that a student may participate in on a weekly basis. A week will be considered Sunday through Saturday. Students may not participate in more than three events per week if one event is on the weekend and may not participate in more than two events in a week if the events are only during the weekdays.

VII. USE OF SCHOOL WEIGHTS

It is important that the school weight bench be used responsibly in order to avoid injury. The weight bench may be used only if the student has a written weight lifting program on file with the athletic director that is approved by a coach. When a student is using the weight bench, they must have a qualified spotter and must have permission from their coach. The weight lifting bar will be kept in the coaches' room.

VIII. SPORTS OFFERINGS DURING ART BLOCKS

Offering a limited amount of sports during art blocks helps in two ways. It helps younger students to manage the time commitment because they can practice during school hours. It also helps in scheduling field usage. This is particularly important in the fall and currently is the only time that art blocks will be considered for sports offerings. The decision to have sports offered during art block time will be made on an annual basis. Consideration will be made based on the following issues: 1.) At the high school level, if the majority of students doing a sport are taking six courses and therefore would quite likely not join an art block anyway, then that sport may be offered during an art block. 2.) Fifth grader teachers don't want that age child to have a full commitment to sports after school. When a sport is offered at the fifth grade level then they might be able to take sports during art blocks while still being able to play in games. 3.) When use of the fields makes a good practice schedule difficult to manage then certain sports might be offered during art blocks to provide for more field usage. Whether to require students on a team to take that "sport" art block will be decided by the coach. The coach will also decide if the "sport" art block will also be available to students who are not members of the team.

IX. TOWN TEAMS

Any student at Sant Bani (no matter what town they live in) have the ability to join any Town of Sanbornton sports teams at the appropriate level.

X. NEW SPORT OFFERINGS

If a group or individual wishes to start a new sport or athletic program at the school, the following procedure must be followed:

A. Demonstrate a desire for the sport

1. A sport must be initiated at least two seasons before that season starts.

Example: If there are wishes for a softball team, the group or individuals must provide a strong case for the start-up for that team by the fall of the previous season.

2. The group or individuals must show that there is viable interest in that sport. This must be done by petition with enough names signed up who are committed to participating in that sport to support a full team, plus subs.

3. If facilities do not exist at the school, options for outside facilities must be presented. With the assistance of the athletic director, these options will be pursued for viability.

4. A committed, capable, experienced volunteer coach (for at least the first season) must be obtained. This person or persons must be approved by the Athletic Director and Administration.

5. A preliminary budget must be presented.

B. School considers request

1. After the above has been clearly presented to the Athletic Director, the Athletic Department and Administration will first decide if the sport fits in with the Athletic Department and School mission statements. They will then consider the proposal and discuss:

a. the effect a new team will have on other athletic teams and co-curricular activities currently offered at the school

b. financial viability -- including long range impact on the school

c. possible team schedule -- are there teams to compete against?

2. The Athletic Director and Administration will then meet with the individual/group proposing the sport to discuss any further issues that arise.

C. Offering the sport

1. For the first year (and possibly more years), the sport will be considered a club. Club status means:

a. the team may possibly not have any interscholastic games but may operate at a very informal level -- such as participating in Faculty vs. Student games or Student vs. Student games

b. the team may have a very light interscholastic schedule playing scrimmages as opposed to games

c. the team will not have full financial support from the school because a sport in it's first year may not have been budgeted for

d. school vans might not be available

2. After a review of the season, another season at the club level might be needed in order to determine if it is a viable option to offer the sport at a full team level

D. Assessment

1. At the end of each new sport season an evaluation of the season will occur. A questionnaire will be given to players, parents and coaches in order to elicit feedback. This questionnaire will be designed by the originators of the team and given to the Athletic Director for review both before and after completion.

2. The Athletic Department and Administration will also review the season.
